SIMON MAGUS

Simon the Sorcerer: the Power of God
Performed for the masses, the spirit of fraud
Spinning enchantment on gathered crowds
His signs and wonders had them wowed

He amazed the high and captured the low
And boasted of greatness at his spell-binding shows
He was a man of great sorcery, charismatic and witty
All people of Samaria knew of him in their city

And he raises his hands and imparts
Deception to captivated hearts
Crowds are converted with the powers that be
This ‘Power of God’ that robs you and me

But then Philip bought the gospel, preaching God’s Kingdom
Baptising with water both men and women
Simon was amazed and believed with his eyes
And with Phillip at some water, he too was baptized

Like a shadow, Simon followed Philip around
Astonished by his miracles and signs through the town
To Samaria also came both Peter and John
And on those that believed they prayed the Spirit on

And they raise their hands and impart
The Spirit to repentant hearts
Crowds are converted with the Power that be
This ‘Power of God’ that lives in you and me

Simon saw this Power released from their hands
And wanted this ‘spirit’ conjured at his command
He was thinking of money and self proclaimed fame
(After all the ‘Power of God’ was his name!)

He was already well known among peasant and king
Now another Power from the Apostles he found wanting
He said, ‘Give me this ability so with power of my hand
I can give the Holy Spirit to others on my land’

And he raises his hands and simply asks
To buy the Spirit from holy hearts
So crowds can be converted with the Power that be
The ‘Power of God’ that lives in you and me

Peter saw Simon’s hand flow with silver and gold
Peter’s blood boiled deep and his face grew cold
And he raged, ‘May you perish along with your wealth!
Because you think you can buy God’s Spirit for self!’

‘Before the Living God you’re not right with your heart!
You’ll not share in this ministry! You’ll have no part!
Repent of this wickedness and pray to the Lord
Hope He forgives for having in your heart, such a thought!’

‘For I see you’re full of bitterness, captive to sin!’
Simon became convicted what was said to him
He said ‘Pray to the Lord that nothing happens to me!’
He repented of his life and to died to Simony

But today they raise their hands and impart
Deception into captivated hearts
Crowds are converted with the powers that be
This ‘power of god’ that robs you and me

Simon says, ‘Be tickled’, Simon says, ‘Obey’
Simon says, ‘Be amazed with all the things I say
Back then all the city, recognised Simon’s might
Today this ‘power of god’ is glorified by light

Light that’s from the stage, magnifying the Simon
Operating in fraudulent power, holding every eye on
Their signs, wonders and boastings- keeping masses enticed
They sell you the spirit of Simon through their merchandise

Buy not spiritual pride through the power of fallen man
Don't go to them for prayer and lay upon you their hand
Their spirit is of the world, so rebuke them Peter’s way
Cursed with their wealth they’ll face the wrath on judgment day

They hide bitterness behind their smiles- their insecurities they ignore
Those that question their power our quickly shown the door
Behind the façade of their glory, they heap upon sin after sin
For outside of the church presentation, Jesus is knocking to come in

Today they raise their hands and impart
Deception into captivated hearts
Crowds are converted with the powers that be
This ‘power of god’ that robs you and me
